The Asus Zenfone 2 Laser- Review

I have always wanted to try out the Asus devices and review them. When they finally decided to send me one, they sent across the awesome looking Asus Zenfone 2 Laser for review and it has been a couple of weeks since I started using it. Infact my mother liked it so much, that she took away the phone from me and wanted to use it. Asus in the last one year has been flooding the market with the Zenfone and I must say they have been giving some stiff competition to competitors. The Zenfone 2 Laser is available in two variants; one is with 5 inch display and the other with a 5.5 inch display that we have today as the review unit. Time to find out how the only smartphone with a Laser Auto-Focus camera in sub 10k category performs.

Specification
Display: 5.5 inch HD 1280x720p IPS capacitive display
OS: Android Lollipop 5.0.2 with Asus ZenUI
CPU: 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core
RAM: 2GB
Storage: 16GB (10.08GB usable)
Cameras: 13MP Laser Auto-Focus (rear), 5 MP (front)
Connectivity: Wi-Fi, 3G/4G/2G, GPS, Bluetooth, microUSB
Battery: 3,000mAh
Dimensions: 152.5 x 77.2 x 10.9mm
Weight: 170 grams
Price: Rs 9,999 (16 GB)

Design
Zenfone 2 Laser is identical to the flagship Zenfone 2 in terms of look and feel. In fact it's hard to tell any difference when both the devices are seen from the front. The three touch capacitive buttons sits at the bottom of the 5.5 inch display, right above the metallic strip that houses the mic. These are not backlit but their silver colour makes them visible even in the dark. The front camera, light sensors and the notification LED are positioned above the display.

the phone has minimal bezels which make the screen seem larger and better to use for viewing videos and pictures. Like the Zenfone 2, the volume controls are positioned at the rear, just below the camera. The power on/off button is pushed on the top edge, which is one odd position to reach with single hand usuage and the size of the phone, but then Asus has provided the double tap on display to solve the problem. The phone weighs about 170gms but not once does it feel heavy in the hand while using.

The rear panel has a matte finish and houses two 4G LTE ready SIM card slots, one microSD card slot and a removable battery unit. The arc design of the rear panel with the gentle curves makes Zenfone 2 laser easily fit in one hand but for users with small hands, it might feel a bit difficult to operate. Though with ZenUI's feature, you can resize the screen of the phone to optimize for one hand usuage.

Display
Zenfone 2 Laser packs a 5.5 inch display with 1280x720p resolution. It accounts to 294ppi, which is not the best but does well with the display of the colours. The display delivers vibrant colours and acceptable viewing angles to consume the multimedia content however, viewing in direct sunlight makes it a little difficult.

On the brighter side, the display comes with Gorilla Glass 4 protection to guard against accidental damages. This makes Zenfone 2 Laser the only smartphone with the top most screen protection at this price point.

Hardware
Asus Zen series is known for their Intel Atom CPUs but for this one, Asus has opted a Snapdragon 410 quad-core CPU clocked at 1.2GHz The 64-bit processor is paired with an Adreno 306 GPU and 2GB RAM to support multitasking. The combination is a fair deal at this price point and offers a satisfactory performance.

The 16GB variant offers 10.8GB of actual storage but the microSD card can boost it up-to 64GB. And if it still does not meet your needs then you have the option of USB OTG to plug in a hard-drive. In terms of connectivity, Zenfone 2 Laser integrates WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, 4G LTE / 3G HSPA+, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. The smartphone is backed by a 3,000 mAH battery unit to power up the 5.5 inch HD display.

Software
Zenfone 2 Laser runs Android 5.0 lollipop over Asus highly customized ZenUI. The UI integrates a number of pre-installed Asus apps such as Share Link, Do it Later, Asus Email, Browser, Mini Movie, Whats next, SuperNote, Kid Mode, etc. name it and Asus have an app for the task, which is a good thing but also makes UI quite heavy. You can delete some of these pre-installed Asus applications from the app manager and those can't be deleted can be disabled from the auto-start manager.

Besides, the UI integrates some features that are quite useful in day-to-day usage such as ZenMotion on-screen gestures to open a host of apps from the lock-screen itself, double tap to wake-up the smartphone, resizing the screen for one hand usage and a variety of themes to customize the look and feel of the smartphone.

Performance
Asus Zenfone 2 Laser packs enough hardware to deliver an acceptable performance. The Snapdragon CPU took care of all computing requirements with no major issues and the 2GB RAM was adequate for most of the multitasking needs. This definitely packs a punch and works smoothly while multi-tasking.

Camera
Zenfone 2 Laser is the only smartphone that comes packed with a laser AutoFocus camera at this price point. It is the same 13MP camera hardware seen in the flagship Zenfone 2 but with a focus time of just 0.3 seconds. The f/2.0-aperture Toshiba lens manages to focus the subject in a jiffy and delivers shots with good detailing, saturation and contrast levels in day-light conditions. However pictures taken in the night are a little hazy with noise.

For photogra[hy enthusiasts, the Asus Pixelmaster camera is a nice app to use as it packs a number of modes so you can play around with these to capture the right moment. Our personal favorite is the Full Manual mode that allows you to adjust exposure, ISO, focus and the scene.

Battery
The laser is backed by a 3,000 mAh battery unit but with the Snapdragon 410 chipset in action, Zenfone 2 Laser manages to deliver a decent battery back-up. The smartphone lasted for 14-16 hours with heavy usage that includes a lot of reading, texting, music playback, social networking, a bit of gaming, calling, etc. With moderate usage, you can make it work for 17 hours on a single charge.

The Asus Zenfone 2 Laser definitely is a strong contender in the sub-10k category. The phone with the attractive ZenUI and features makes the phone a hot favourite. Where else do you get such a feature loaded phone at this price point? I definitely would recommend this to anyone looking to buy a phone with decent camera, great multitasking and display.

BlueAir 650E HEPASIlent Air Purifier Review

With pollution levels in several Indian cities touching alarming levels, a number of people are investing in air purifiers. Reports indicate that since 2012-13, the sale of these gadgets, which promise to clean up in the air in homes and offices, has more than doubled. The consumer is spoilt for choice with air purifiers from several brands - BlueAir, Sharp, Panasonic, Eureka Forbes, Philips, Honeywell and others - available in the market. They can cost anything between Rs 3,000 and Rs 95,000 or more. We got the BlueAir 650E  HEPASilent Air Purifier for review and here it is:

There are different kinds of air purifiers depending on the technology they employ to clean up the air. First up are those that remove particulate matter and allergens by using a filter. A combination of a good HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter and a sound carbon filter is crucial for an efficient air purifier and BlueAir scores big on this front!

However, a lot of machines do not come with pre-filters that are necessary, or are at least recommended, given Indian conditions where the air has large particulate matter and heavy pollutants. Pre-filters suck in and filter out larger particles that could otherwise choke the HEPA filter. If the HEPA filter gets choked, you will need to change it sooner than later and that can be a costly affair because these filters are expensive.

Then there are the ionising purifiers, which create charged molecules called ions. Most molecules in the air have neutral charge, which means they have the same number of positive and negative electrons. When these molecules pass through the ionising purifier, they either pick up or drop an additional electron, thus giving the molecule a negative or positive charge. Once charged, the particle is drawn to anything that has the opposite charge (remember the law of physics that says opposites attract?). Two metal plates in the air purifier - one charged positive and the other negative - attract these particles.

Also available in the market are ozone generators that change the molecules of oxygen (O2) into ozone (O3). Ozone, it is claimed, removes odours and infection-causing elements from the air.

Yet another technology uses the ultraviolet (UV) radiation to clean up the air. The UV light targets airborne viruses and bacteria. Then there are air purifiers that work on nanotechnology, which is said to remove, besides nitrogen oxide and sulphur oxide, the harmful volatile organic compounds that add to smog and ozone levels. Panasonic air purifiers employ nanotechnology.

It's a confusing choice, no doubt. So ideally consult an expert before buying an air purifier. By and large, what you should focus on is: the quality of the filter, the speed of the fan, clean air delivery rate and the noise the machine generates.

Air pollutants can be broadly classified into three categorise: particulate pollution; gaseous pollution (nitrogen oxide and sulphur oxide); and microbiological pollutants (bacteria and viruses). The first two are harmful, even in small quantities. The HEPA and carbon filters present in the BlueAir 650E are effective for these.

The BlueAir 650E is best suited for large rooms or spaces, i.e. within 690sqft, and the best part is that despite working for such a huge area it also doesn’t make much noise. With nifty controls and a very sleek look, it fits into just about any decor, whether you just want one for home or for your art gallery. Solid materials definitely put it in a different class than the cheap plastic ones.

Built with what they claim are ‘future-perfect filters’ and an ion particle-charging process to remove 99.97% of impurities, This one comes with a remote control and the speed and other controls can be easily controlled without going close to it and changing it.  But you’ll need to change your filters every six months, as with most similar systems, and the Blueair 650E uses ones they call HEPASilentPlus, which include a particle filter along with a carbon filter to stop odors and smoke. The grill design is unique, and for those who appreciate CADR measurements, this one handles 100 cubic feet per minute. At about 30 decibels on the middle power setting, it’s barely noticeable, though you will hear a hum on high power.

At a price range of Rs 98,000, we think this is best suited for corporate offices and large bungalows but not an apartment in the city.

The blazing fast Intel 5th & 6th gen processors

Taking cue from the changing technologies and the needs of the people, it is best to reinvent or perish. Intel is the best example to prove that. It had two options- change or perish. It chose to change. Today it is rebuilding its status as the most powerful processor maker in the smartphones industry. Not to forget, its unbeatable track record with the PCs.
Intel will now be in your smartphone as well

The manufacture has launched a range of 6th generation processors, specially suited for mobile devices. The all-new Y-series, U-series, and H-series processors deliver a new class of computing with a host of new features to power the next generation of two-in-ones, notebooks, and other small form factor or mobile devices.

The family is comprised of processors that deliver a leap in performance and power efficiency, provide stunning visuals, and enable amazing user experiences when paired with Windows 10, the latest OS in town.

The Y-Series processors includes the Core i7, Core i5 and Core i3 processors. Each of these is a dual core chipset, with double the effective processing threads (again thanks to Hyper Threading Technology).

the U series includes the Core m7, Core m5 and Core m3 processors. Each of these is a dual core chipset, with double the effective processing threads (thanks to Hyper Threading Technology).

The H series comes next in the 6th gen which includes the Core i7, Core i5 and Core i3 processors. The first two are quad cores (with 8 effective processing threads). The Core i3 supports only two cores (4 threads).

Features Of The New Processors

A lot of useful features are provided. A few interesting ones are mentioned:

The new processors feature version two of the Turbo Boost Technology, wherein the frequency is dynamically modified as and when needed.

They also support the Hyper Threading Technology. This means that there are two processing thread for each physical core present on the chip. Hence, developers can write multi-threaded applications to efficiently utilize the cores and their extra threads, thus getting more work done simultaneously.

Then there is the Smart Cache. The total shared cache memory is allocated to each core at run-time, depending upon the need. This reduces the number of effective cache misses, in turn improving the performance manifolds.

They also offer improved security. In order to generate random keys for encryption/decryption, a special hardware-based number generator is used.

In order to deliver the most out of the battery, Collaborative Processor Performance Control is deployed. It reduces active power to deliver improved battery life.

Smart Response Technology is used to reduce the waiting time, and allow the user to access files and applications with greater speed.

As far as applications are concerned, at least on paper, there is no doubt that these beasts can run any large or small app available as of today. Though, we'll have to wait and watch how they really perform.

With all the amazing features claiming to improve the productivity and efficiency, I am sure Intel will make a mark in the world of mobile devices as well. After all, it is good to have Intel inside! One concern which I have is the absence of any hexa or octa core processor from Intel. Since Qualcomm already has such chipsets into the market, and they are already in use by the smartphone OEMs, I think Intel needs to soon join the bandwagon in order to compete.

MIUI 7 - A Quick Review

I have been using the MIUI 7 since almost a week now. Here's what I like and what I don't about the new update.

Likes:
  • The battery life has improved as demonstrated. While I cannot quanitfy the fact that it has improved by 10%, With continuous 3G data on, multiple calls, messages and data sync on, by the end of the day, I still manage to have battery in the range of 35-45% left. I generally listen to the radio on my way back home for about 30 mins ride. This results in another 2-3% drop.
  • The device tends to have about 1.2 GB of RAM free after a reboot which after App usage and clearing the used apps settles in the range of 800MB-1GB resulting in a lag free and fast performance. I have close to 300 total packages installed (System+User Apps)
  • I like the way unnecessary notifications can be blocked. this way, when you install an app and have a persistent notification annoying you, you can get rid of it quickly.
  • The Copy OTP feature in the SMS is a great one. not only saves time, but also ensures that you don't mess it up.

Don't Like:
  • Customization options are limited in the MIUI Launcher. There is no way i can trigger the app to arrange the apps installed into an alphabetic sort order.
  • The settings option for wallpaper change would not work if you have a custom launcher installed. It continues to fail and changes the wall paper of only the lockscreen if that has been selected.
  • The option to do manual network search is not intuitive and needs to be more like the one in AOSP.
  • MIUI 7 is based on KitKat and there are no hopes of it ever upgrading to 5.1 or 6 ever.

Blippar Launches Visual Browser for the Physical World

INDIA - August 2015: Blippar, the world's largest image recognition and augmented reality platform, launched the first-ever proprietary mobile visual search. This re-launched version of the original Blippar app will change the way consumers interact with the physical world. Opening the free Blippar app, users will be able to simply "look" at any object via the camera on their mobile devices to activate instantaneous digital search and draw information directly from the world around them.

"Blippar has already worked with thousands of the world's largest brands and publishers to create engaging branded experiences that are triggered by objects, magazine pages, advertisements and more, "blipped" by millions of users around the world," explains Blippar Founder and CEO Ambarish Mitra. "It is the healthy appetite for this new behavior that has fuelled the move into visual search."

Blippar is launching this new capability by first making all English-language DVD covers and movie posters including some Bollywood movies, sports logos for the Indian Cricket League and other US and Europen sports league blippable. When users' blipp one of these items or images, they will instantaneously be presented with a range of contextual, snackable information. For example, if they blipp an movie poster they may be presented with access to the trailer of the movie, details on what people are saying about it on Twitter or more information about the cast.

This is just the first step in Blippar's ambitious mission to make the entire physical world visually searchable via mobile devices and wearables. In the future, Blippar will add to its growing catalogue of blippable objects in stages with the ultimate aim of making everything blippable - from an apple, to a chocolate bar, to a dog on the street, to the Eiffel Tower and beyond.

Web-based search as it exists today has dominated the digital experience, both online and mobile. From inputting keywords to digging through pages of links to access information, this governing search behavior is limited by vocabulary and literacy. Blippar's image recognition capabilities will extend beyond the confines of language to empower consumers to instantaneously pull timely, relevant information directly from the environment around them.

"The human imagination, curiosity and the quest for knowledge are all often limited by our capacity to define and assign language to describe and seek answers from the world around us," added Mitra. "Today marks the beginning of a new era of search, where curious users will be able to visually search the world through the lens of the Blippar app. The technology holds massive potential for enriching real world experiences and delivering genuine value to our users. The visual search is not replacing text-based search, it's an alternate behaviour which satisfies people's spontaneous needs of instant object focused curiosity, therefore introducing the light web."

Blippar's proprietary search engine is net neutral. Blippar users will be served the highest quality and most accurate sources of information within the app, displayed on a fluid user interface that uses design and color input directly from the blipped item itself. The speed and accuracy of the Blippar platform allows users to blipp and access information faster than traditional web search, with no delay in latency. Further, Blippar's location-based predictive computing uses deep learning and artificial intelligence to refine and personalize its visual search results for each user.

Blippar will continue to work closely with brands and agencies to bring products to life through engaging interactive experiences. The updated Blippar app is available for download on iOS and will soon be available on Android.
