ABI's 'Tech for Good 2015' Women-Only Hackathon in Bangalore on 29 August, 2015

The hackathon will be held as a contest over two rounds. The first round will be conducted in five different cities (Bangalore, Hyderabad, Madurai, New Delhi and Pune). The top finalists selected from the first round will present their applications at the grand finale to be held at the largest technical conference for women in India - the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing India (GHCI) 2015 in Bangalore during 2-4 December, 2015. The winning teams will be chosen by a panel of judges at GHCI 2015.

MIUI 7 - A Quick Review

I have been using the MIUI 7 since almost a week now. Here's what I like and what I don't about the new update.

Likes:
  • The battery life has improved as demonstrated. While I cannot quanitfy the fact that it has improved by 10%, With continuous 3G data on, multiple calls, messages and data sync on, by the end of the day, I still manage to have battery in the range of 35-45% left. I generally listen to the radio on my way back home for about 30 mins ride. This results in another 2-3% drop.
  • The device tends to have about 1.2 GB of RAM free after a reboot which after App usage and clearing the used apps settles in the range of 800MB-1GB resulting in a lag free and fast performance. I have close to 300 total packages installed (System+User Apps)
  • I like the way unnecessary notifications can be blocked. this way, when you install an app and have a persistent notification annoying you, you can get rid of it quickly.
  • The Copy OTP feature in the SMS is a great one. not only saves time, but also ensures that you don't mess it up.

Don't Like:
  • Customization options are limited in the MIUI Launcher. There is no way i can trigger the app to arrange the apps installed into an alphabetic sort order.
  • The settings option for wallpaper change would not work if you have a custom launcher installed. It continues to fail and changes the wall paper of only the lockscreen if that has been selected.
  • The option to do manual network search is not intuitive and needs to be more like the one in AOSP.
  • MIUI 7 is based on KitKat and there are no hopes of it ever upgrading to 5.1 or 6 ever.

Blippar Launches Visual Browser for the Physical World

INDIA - August 2015: Blippar, the world's largest image recognition and augmented reality platform, launched the first-ever proprietary mobile visual search. This re-launched version of the original Blippar app will change the way consumers interact with the physical world. Opening the free Blippar app, users will be able to simply "look" at any object via the camera on their mobile devices to activate instantaneous digital search and draw information directly from the world around them.

At a global launch event today at Delhi, Xiaomi, the parent company of MIUI launched the 7th iteration of the ROM while celeberating the 5 years of its existence. The ROM features several new and interesting features and comes with many performance improvements as well. The biggest performance improvements that I would love to point out would be the "Better Battery Usage" and "Optimal Performance for a better UX". While the presentation spoke nothing different from what was presented in China a few days ago, the only difference was that this was for the Global Audience. What is very disappointing is the fact that the ROM is still based on Android KitKat when Google has already released 3 iterations (5.0, 5.1, 6.0) since then. What do you think? Does this change warrant a version upgrade to 7 or should MiUi have stuck to something like 6.1?

Videocon Telecom plans to pool spectrum with other operators to provide 4G LTE services

New Delhi, August 19 2015:  A day after government's approval on spectrum sharing policy, Videocon Telecom, the innovative & vibrant telecom arm of the Indian conglomerate Videocon Group, announced that the telco is in talks with other telecom operators for spectrum sharing agreements in Madhya Pradesh including Chhattisgarh, Gujarat and Haryana telecom circles.

Spectrum sharing policy allows two operators to mutually pool radio frequencies to enable them to effectively use the airwaves and enhance wireless bandwidth.

The telco which has been planning to rollout 4G LTE services for quite some time now, but was constrained due to the available spectrum of 5MHz not being adequate for both 2G voice and 4G data. The telco also explored possibilities of rolling of narrowband 4G LTE earlier, the technology which however could not evolve due to its own limitations.

Post announcement of the much awaited Spectrum sharing policy, the telco plans to  pool its spectrum with a partner operator. The plan here being to allocate 5Mhz for 4G data and 5Mhz for 2G voice or upgrade their Network to 4G, and shift 2G voice on one of the existing players. This way both Videocon Telecom and the partner operator will be able to offer both 4G and 2G services on each other's Network and optimally utilise the available spectrum, at the same time, ensuring and enhancing QoS.

Videocon Telecom, is already in discussion with one of the operators on the same for its MP&CG, Gujarat and Haryana circles.


Speaking on the announcement of spectrum sharing, Mr. Arvind Bali, Director & CEO, Videocon Telecommunications Ltd. said " We  welcome the much awaited and most sought after spectrum sharing policy . I think the policy shall definitely help in optimum utilization of the most  scarce resource.
